Safety Tips for Online Dating Adventurers

By Eddie Yakubovich

Online dating is really internet dating that is a fun and convenient way to meet people other people. Internet dating as we all know has become every popular because of its convenience and variety. One must still be very careful meeting up with someone they hardly know. Here are some tips that will help you keep safe with online dating.

First I feel it’’s very important to start very slow and be very cautious when you are starting a new relationship with any online dating internet person. As the old saying goes be very careful of anyone who seems too good to be true.

In reality they probably are. Some people fail to realize that eventually you probably will be meeting face to face and that entire fake or exaggerated persona will catch up and then how will you explain yourself. So my suggestion is to keep it real from the very start.

I strongly suggest that you begin your online dating communications through e-mails. You should have a sense of comfort before you get into any conversations and by all means never divulge any of your personal information.

It’’s a matter of common sense that will keep you safe. Try to be careful and think about good decisions that are going to affect you down the road. Always try to meet in public places when you have reached that stage of interaction.

It is often said that a person will seem trustworthy through consistent behavior. Pay good attention to details along the way of the test process. If you suspect that someone is lying about details of a subject or details about themselves then they probably are. Remember you should trust yourself more and the people online less. It’’s about commonsense.

As a rule to myself I feel that viewing photos is probably the most important step in getting to know who you are about to mingle with. Make sure a profile has a photo of them and preferably the photo should show a lot of their body. I feel is the most important because this will give you an idea of a person’’s appearance.

Try to get several pictures and at different locations. If a person gives you excuses as to why they cant produce photos of them selves them take that as an indicator that they have something to hide and probably have intentions different from yours.

Online dating should be a fun and adventurous experience for all parties involved. There are many like minded people looking for exactly what you are seeking. If a profile seems to cause you a bit of concern then you shouldn”t waste time on it.

There are hundres to choose from so just keep searching until you do come across what feels comfortable and work it from their. Its like people you come across at the gym or in the supermarket that try to initiate a conversation. Your instinct guards your judgement and that same feeling should apply here. It’’s no different.

Date Russian Women And See The Difference

By Peter Finch

It is not unusual for men from all over the world to consider Russian women as their love interests. If you are one of those smitten, here is some good advice for you to impress your Russian lass!

Naturally, men are falling for Russian women left, right and center. There is Anna Kournikova, the Russian tennis sensation who is currently setting many a male heart aflutter, and then there is Maria Sharapova, the topic of many male discussions in bars.

Then there is the female Russian duo of Tatu - Julia and Lena, two women who have consolidated the fact that Russia is the home of feminine beauty. When Tatu toured the US only a few years back, their beauty was only overshadowed by their singing talent. American men could not get enough of both of these talents of the duo!

Russian women are endowed with an incomparable natural beauty. They have baby blue eyes coupled with a lethal figure, along with a very sexy manner of walking. Watch any international fashion show. You will surely discover that most of the lissome beauties out there are Russian. Clothes love their bodies, and simply accentuate their beauties, which make these Russian women absolutely hot with couturiers from all over the world.

It is not a surprise that Russian women top male desire everywhere. However, when you date Russian women you need to realize that it is more important what they might find in you also. One of the best ways to make Russian women realize that you are genuinely interested in them is to learn their language and converse with them in it. This is a very difficult thing to do, but there are rich benefits too. Russian language is very soft and good to hear, and it will be a very good addition to your knowledge. It is not necessary to learn the whole language, but if you know some phrases that can help you compliment your Russian girlfriend, you would do quite well.

Like, you could greet them with “Zdrastvui” or “Privet”, which is akin to saying “Hello” in English. Or, if you think a Russian woman is lovely to look at, you could compliment her by saying “Tiy preekrahsah vigleedesh”, which means you do find her beautiful. Say this when you date Russian women. She will certainly appreciate the effort you are putting in impressing her.

When you date Russian women, it is very necessary that you learn to romance her in the right way. Russian women are quite sentimental, so they will appreciate your little sweet nothings. Gift her something. You will see them reciprocating by doing something with their own hands, like knitting a sweater for you. In fact, you should give small tokens of your love each time you have a date with her. Russian women are not materialistic, but the small things make them realize you took time out to get something for them.

Communication is important too. Russian women are not like their counterparts in the advanced countries of the world where they take it for granted that their men are busy when they cannot call them up from work. Russian women will want your attention all the time, and it would be a very good way to show your attention if you were to call them several times in a day. When you are not on a date with a Russian woman, keep in touch with the phone. Let her know what you are up to all the time; she will want to be reassured time and again, especially since you are foreign to her.

You must definitely go all the romantic way to build your relationship with a Russian woman. Have dates with Russian women often, but keep the romantic fire burning also. Make it very clear that you are serious about her. If you take this much care at the outset of your relationship, you can rest assured that you will have a very constructive relationship with her for life.

Free Online Dating Myths To Be Wary Of

By Wayne James

If you are familiar with the online dating industry you will know that it has changed significantly since it’’s introduction. There are more free online dating services today than ever before. Since the introduction of the free services many people started questioning whether the free services were as effective as the paid services.

I will disclose some of the myths of the free online dating industry that you should be wary of.

1. Many critics of the industry have stated that the paid dating services will be going out of business because the free services have been growing rapidly over the past few years. Critics have stated that consumers will not pay for something they can attain for free.

Based on my own experience I can say that the quality of members on a paid service is better than that of the free services. There are many paid services which offer unique features to their members, many of the paid services tend to have more overall features than the free services.

2. Some critics insist that the quality of members on both types of services are exactly the same. This is false because there are many paid services who will do a background check on their new members before giving them access to the site. This creates a much safer environment for everyone involved.

While the free dating services do not do background checks, they allow absolutely anyone to join their site.

3. There are just as many people sending spam on both types of services. This is false as well, spam is a big problem in the online dating industry today. Spammers create multiple accounts on the free services and they send spam to other members. The administrator of the service may delete the account of anyone who is guilty of sending spam. However, doing this is not going to solving the problem because the service is free so the person will create other accounts and continue to send spam.

While the paid dating services will only allow their paying members the ability to contact other members. So members who send spam on a paid service will also get their profile deleted. However they will have to pay again after they have created a new profile before they can contact other members. This is ultimately what deters most members on a paid dating service from sending spam.

Everything has it’’s pros and cons even free online dating, just because it’’s free doesn”t mean it’’s a good substitute for the paid dating services.

Lovely Desserts To Spice Up Your Valentine\’s Day

By Mary Anne Durkee

You don”t need to be a chef-in-training to create a spectacular dessert that will have your sweetheart smiling until next Valentine’’s Day. You can make a truly decadent creation by following this simple chocolate dessert recipe. I like to use the large stem berries as they look spectacular and have a built in handle. Here are a couple of recipes that are guaranteed to make your Valentines a lot more interesting!

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
INGREDIENTS

6 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
4 ounces white chocolate, chopped
1 tablespoon shortening
36 large strawberries, washed and dried

PREPARATION

Line baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper. In 1/2-quart saucepan on MELT on Wolf electric or induction cooktop, place bittersweet chocolate. Heat about 12 minutes or until chocolate is completely melted, stirring occasionally. Dip strawberries halfway into chocolate and place on waxed paper. Chill in Sub-Zero refrigerator about 30 minutes, or until chocolate is set. In 1/2-quart saucepan on MELT, place white chocolate and shortening. Melt until smooth. Drizzle white chocolate over dark chocolate-covered strawberries. Chill about 30 minutes or until set. Strawberries can be refrigerated up to 6 hours.

Makes 3 dozen strawberries.

Chocolate Truffles: The word truffle has several meanings in the world of candy because of their different countries of origin. It was invented in France as a small, rich chocolate made of ganache, often flavored and usually shaped into a ball. The original recipe, rolled in cocoa, was named after the black truffle fungus because of its physical resemblance.

INGREDIENTS
1 (12 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
Half cup butter
1/3 cups water
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon flavored liqueur (raspberry, orange, mint, kirsch, or Grand Marnier)
Three Fourth cup cocoa
*optional: add a little chile powder for some fun heat

PREPARATION
Pour water in the basin of a bain de marie . Heat to 140F (60C), covered with lid. In the porcelaine part, place chocolate chips, butter, water and liqueur. Place over water.

Heat about 10 minutes or until chocolate and butter is melted, stirring occasionally. Remove the porcelaine container of the bain de marie and gently whisk in egg yolk until just combined. Place pan in refrigerator for 1 hour or until firm. (Do not refrigerate overnight.)
When chilled, scoop chocolate by tablespoon and roll each into a ball. Roll balls into cocoa, chopped nuts, chcolate sprinkles, etc as you desire. Place balls on waxed paper lined baking sheet. Repeat until all mixture is used. Refrigerate until firm. Store in refrigerator.

Alternate method: In 2-quart saucepan onlow, place chips, butter and water. Heat about 20 minutes or until melted, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Gently whisk egg yolk and liqueur into mixture. Place pan in refrigerator for 1 hour. (Do not refrigerate overnight.) Continue as above.

Makes 3 dozen balls.

5 Reasons Why Dating Sites Are Effective

By Wayne James

Online dating sites were one of the most brilliant inventions of the 20th century. Dating sites have been around for over a decade now and they continue to be a big part of American pop culture. In this article we will discuss 5 reasons why dating sites have been so effective in our society today.

1. Online dating provides an environment which makes it easy to communicate with people who you may not have met had it not been for the dating site. Whether you are seeking someone local or international, you will be able to accomplish this on a dating site.

2. You may not have a hard time finding a date in the real world. However, you have been disappointed time and time again when you discover that you have absolutely nothing in common with the people you go out on dates with. On a dating site you will be able to decrease the likelihood of this happing as often.

A dating site will allow you get to know other people at your own pace. You will also have several different ways of communicating with other members such as email, voice, and video chat… After you have been chatting with someone, if you think you will be a good match, only then should you decide to go on a date.

3. You may be actively looking for someone to date, but you may be too busy to go out and socialize. In this case joining an online dating site would be a good alternative.

4. If you are extremely shy, sometimes this can send the wrong message. You may be interested in someone but you may act like you are not. On dating sites the element of shyness is almost non existent. If you initiate contact with someone online and they reject you, it’’s much easier to deal with it online than it is if you were standing face to face.

5. You may be comfortable meeting people in the real world going to bars, house parties, and different social events. However, you may be looking for another way to meet compatible singles. By focusing on all available options, you will increase your chances of finding a compatible partner much faster.

If you are looking for a partner it is important that you should try to take full advantage of all your options. By setting limitations you will only hinder your chances of finding a partner.

Vacation Time in China (Part 3)

By John Abbot

I learned that night that Chinese love to sleep on really hard beds (at least they say they love it, but I suspect it is related directly to their budget because I”ve noticed that the wealthy Chinese seem to mysteriously opt for very comfortable Sealy’’s and the like). Most hotels, except for the very top end 5 Stars, have beds that are just too hard for us spoiled Westerners, and this hotel, perhaps a consequence of its Red Army ownership, had a bed that was like concrete covered by a single cotton sheet. So I awoke early, unsure if I had actually slept at all, showered, and began a lengthy quest for coffee, which I normally cannot begin my day without.

My “Chinese Date” was to last 4 days, and my beautiful Chinese lady companion was coming to Hangzhou by train to meet me that afternoon, so having been driven out of bed by discomfort at about 6 AM, at least 3 hours earlier than my intended wakeup time, I had some serious time to kill.

Starting with the breakfast buffet that was included in my room charge and was being served in what could have passed for an army mess hall (or should I say a Red Army mess hall), I scoured the joint but found no sign of coffee whatsoever. I also found little evidence of palatable food. The Chinese vision of breakfast disappointed me then and it disappoints me still. They generally seem to not differentiate between breakfast and other meals when it comes to most dishes, with the exception of a sort of rice porridge called Congee. More and more the hotel buffets include a variety of Western food for breakfast, but that hotel, 5 years ago made no such effort whatsoever.

Congee, as it turns out, isn”t that bad if you do it right, but even now I can”t handle it for breakfast. Bare congee has the look, feel and taste of lumpy Elmer’’s Glue, which I recall from my childhood being equally disappointing as a culinary item. However it turns out that all those various piles of dried and strange looking things piled next to the congee pot are actually ingredients to be added to give it flavour, and some of them are actually very good and turn the congee into something not half bad. However, those things tend to be spices and pickles and other items that I will never be able to associate with the word “breakfast”, so breakfast in China continues to disappoint.

Luckily that morning I discovered two items that apparently both I and the Chinese like for breakfast; grilled tomatoes and bacon. In fact as it turned out the bacon was as good as any I”d ever had. So 56 slices later (perhaps I exaggerate but I got my money’’s worth in bacon) I ventured out into Hangzhou to track down some coffee. This turned out to be no small quest with a surprizing (to me anyway) ending.

Hangzhou is advertised both within China and in international travel guides, such as “The Rough Guide”, as one of, if not the, most beautiful cities in China, and that is exactly why I was there for my first look at China. The highlight of Hangzhou is what the Chinese refer to as “the famous West Lake” so I decided that I would go check it out as I was as likely to find coffee there as anywhere else. It was still only about 8 AM, and I anticipated a relaxing stroll around West Lake. By coincidence I am now in a committed relationship with a beautiful Chinese Woman who is from Hanhzhou, so I have come to know it as truly being one of the most beautiful cities not only in China but perhaps in the world, but my experiences that day, on one of the busiest tourist travel days in China, did nothing to endear Hangzhou to my heart.

First, I stepped out of the hotel into an incredible schmozzle of street traffic, mostly pedestrian, which immediately shattered my dreams of tranquility. Next I took a taxi ride to West Lake that bested any chase scene from any movie I have every seen. I”ve now come to realize that every taxi ride in China is an adventure of sorts, but this one was wild even by Chinese standards. I stepped out of the taxi into a sea of people. It was still just 8:20 AM.

West Lake in Hangzhou, on most days of the year it turns out, is indeed very tranquil and beautiful, but on the first day of May it is like fighting your way through the departing crowd at the Superbowl, only you are the only one in the crowd with no real combat experience embroiled in a battle you must fight every step for miles. West Lake park is a big place and every square foot was being coveted by at least 2 people. I saw no grass except by looking straight down between my feet, I saw no lake except a little shimmer throug a sea of heads, and if I hadn”t been taller than 98% of the Chinese people I doubt I would have seen the trees.

After 4 hours of pushing and shoving my way though this mass of people, all of whom seemed as unconcerned as I was agitated, I, with my right elbow up and my left hand firmly gripping my wallet pocket, emerged from the crowd at another exit point of the park and stumbled along the street leading from the park into a commercial area. This area was far more crowded than major cities I have lived in, such as Los Angeles or Vancouver, but compared to West Lake park it was vacant.

Every second building housed a Tea House, and every Tea House was packed with customers, and not one Tea House seemed to even recognize the word “coffee”, let alone serve it. I went on like this for a long, long time. It was early afternoon now and I knew I had to make my way back to the hotel shortly for my much anticipated meeting with my new Chinese Ladyfriend (who I was now starting to envision as my saviour), and I was already looking around for a taxi when I saw IT.

I had no expectations by now of finding a coffeeshop, thinking that at best I might find a western style restaurant that would serve something at least pretending to be coffee. So it was with no small surprise that I spotted what has become one of the most familiar logos in the west. Up ahead was a Starbucks. I will not bother you with my thoughts on Starbucks prior to coming to China, except to say that my previous boycott of that purveyor of coffee came to an abrupt end at that exact moment. It was with great joy in my heart that Starbucks instantly became my new best friend.

Not only was it a surprize to find a Starbucks in Hangzhou, but this was the biggest Starbucks I had ever seen. It seemed massive, and it was full of customers, all Chinese. Boy, those guys at Starbucks know how to market. I headed back to my hotel with not one, but two, mucho largo super grande coffees of the day. And they had that exact same over roasted almost burned taste that Starbucks serves the world over and which until that moment I hated so much but now I loved. Boy, those guys really know how to market. “Make bad coffee but keep it consistent and they will come (even in a world that drinks only tea).” Who knew?

I arrived at my hotel just moments before I was due to learn lesson #1 of web dating, which you are about to learn as well if you didn”t already know (I can”t be the only guy in the world this naive), so I went and freshened up and drank my two litres of coffee. I had barely started to feel the caffeine surge when the phone rang and Chinese Date #1 announced her arrival. Suddenly nervous, I made my way down to the lobby.

Lesson #1: Do not assume they will look like their picture.

I should not have been overly surprised. After all, I had used a picture that did not reveal my 4th month pregnancy (slight beer belly), and also didn”t pronounce the grey in my hair, but at least mine had been taken in the last two months. Hers may have been taken in the last decade, but I doubt it. Before you fly all the way to China to meet someone talk to them openly and honestly about the presentation they are making to you. Tell them you”re sorry but you”ve had bad experiences before and you just want to be sure that you both will be meeting the person you expect to meet. If she waffles trouble is on the horizon and you might as well cut it off early. Postpone your trip and find someone else, or if you really like her, ask her to come clean and send you the pictures that show the current her. Maybe it can still work.

In truth, this was still a quite attractive Chinese lady, much more fetching than my most recent dates back home, but in her pictures she was stunning and at least 10 years younger and 10 pounds lighter than on our meeting. If she”d been honest from the beginning I probably would still have wanted to meet her, but now we were off to a bad start. When she shyly asked if she was what I was expecting, being an ever polite Canadian, I falsely said yes, she was very pretty. After I translated the word pretty to “beautiful” she was ecstatic. Through good manners and fear of conflict I instantly turned a bad start into a 4 day date in hell. If I”d just been honest maybe we could have saved something of a relationship, friendship at least, but with my own innocent little well intentioned lie I drastically compounded an already bad situation.

Lesson #2: Be honest no matter what. I don”t mean brutally honest, I mean kindly, gently honest. It will save you both a world of grief.

Off we headed to my room.

Do You Know If She Is Cheating?

By Jerry Leung

We hear that some women say that their men are cheating them from time to time. Sometimes they are right that their men are really cheating them. However, the fact is that they will be wrong most of the time. There are even men complaining that their ladies keep accusing them of cheating but in fact they are not. The interesting question is that: Do women also cheat men?

In fact, women will also cheat men. Of course the reason a woman to cheat can be different from that of a man. For most men, they cheat because they would like to spread their gene. On the contrary, women do that because they want to find the best partners they can get. She would like to bear the child of a man who has the best genes.

Although it seems that the above will only happen in animal world, we have to admit that human beings are also animals and this will also happen in the human world. Human beings have the ability to walk on two legs and use our thumbs to hold tools, but it does not mean that we are not animals.

So, how can we tell if a woman is cheating? In fact, there are ways to tell you if your lady is cheating on you. However, you should never make the same mistakes that most women will make. You should not accuse her of cheating unless you have the confidence that she is really cheating. We feel disappointed when your lady accuses you of cheating and this will also be true if you accuse her of that. As a result, you should think before you leap unless there is evidence that she is cheating!

As a matter of fact, women will be wearing underwear which they feel more comfortable when they have come to a long term relationship with men. However, they will probably try something which may turn a man on at the very beginning.

So, if you find that she start wear sexy panties and bras again, this can be a bad news for you. Of course this cannot be real evidence since your lady might only want to try something new and turn you on. However, if this is the case, she may only be wearing it for a few days or so. If you find that she keeps wearing these sexy under clothes. You should be more careful because this can be a sign of cheating!

How To Avert A Disaster On Valentine\’s Day

By Trinity Tresp

Each year men and women across the country plan elaborate Valentine’’s Day celebrations only to be disappointed when circumstances beyond their control ruin their planned activities with their date. This article will give you a few ideas of how to plan for the unexpected so that you can still have a romantic Valentine’’s Day with your date.

The most likely circumstance beyond your control will be the weather. If you are planning an outdoor Valentine’’s Day date you will need to have a backup plan for spending the date indoors. For instance, if you are planning a romantic picnic in the park or on the beach you should also plan ahead of how to move the picnic inside. If you are planning a beach picnic and get rained out, plan on bringing the picnic home to awaiting beach music, beach style cocktails and your picnic food. You will want to create a “beach” style atmosphere for your date.

The second most likely circumstance beyond your control would have to do with your romantic restaurant date. Although you may have called weeks in advance and made a reservation, there is always the chance that the restaurant has lost your reservation or overbooked for the evening, or even had a pipe to break closing the restaurant down completely. You may be left out in the cold, literally, when this happens. Make a backup plan to prevent this. You might double book reservations and have a table reserved at another restaurant, just incase, or your might plan on cooking the dinner yourself. This can be just as romantic or even more so than dinner reservations. You would want to have all the ingredients waiting at home so there is no need to go shopping, it should all be ready and waiting.

There are any number of other circumstances beyond your control which could affect your date. You may have tickets to see your date’’s favorite singer. One of the performers could get sick and the concert could be cancelled. You could prepare for this by keeping some gifts either at home, in the limo, or your vehicle so they will be available when needed. It could still be a romantic evening, take your date to eat in an appropriate restaurant to carry on the atmosphere of the evening. If it was a Jimmy Buffett concert that was cancelled, go to a beach bar where you can have margaritas and cheeseburgers in paradise. Most likely there would be plenty of Jimmy Buffett selections on the jukebox to help set the atmosphere. After dining, having drinks, and dancing excuse yourself so you can bring the gifts in. You could have a Jimmy Buffett DVD, a Jimmy Buffett jacket or t-shirt, a parrothead can koozie, and a Parrothead beach towel. Get a Jimmy Buffett beach tote bag to carry the items in. After the dinner you could then go home and watch the DVD. If the concert is not cancelled you can give the gifts in addition and score even more points, but, you”ll score the most points by saving the evening no matter what happens.

There are so many circumstances that could come up depending on your planned evening that you must have a backup plan. It does not have to be elaborate or expensive, but something to save the evening. If you get in a spot, at the very least, your date will know you took the time to make sure everything would go smoothly and well planned. So even if you have to change to your backup plan your date will be very impressed. Happy Valentine’’s Day!

What Makes A Romantic Evening

By Rohit Chopra

Romance has the potential to give a heady feeling to all those involved. This emotion is associated with everything beautiful. The world becomes an incredibly wonderful place to live in, all troubles seem to be easy to overcome and life is sheer bliss.

If you have a date with a person you really fancy, a romantic evening out would be really heavenly. In preparation for the evening a person is bound to spend time selecting a nice outfit for their dream date. At the same time, if you wish to really enjoy a romantic evening you also have to give careful thought to the place where you will be spending time. Try to go to a place that is quiet and peaceful where you will not be disturbed too often. A loud and noisy ambience can ruin your evening. A garden restaurant with a table for two in a corner, away from the hustle bustle is an ideal proposition for such evening.

Once you have decided about the venue you can then give some thought to enhancing the enjoyment of the experience. Bring along a bunch of flowers for your partner and watch their face light up. A bunch of red roses says more than words and will convey your feelings even if you are too shy to do it yourself.

Fine dining and a romantic evening are inextricably linked. Fine dining need not imply expensive meals but surely the romance factor can be played up. A candle light dinner is supposed to provide an aura of romance. The dancing flames creating a light and shadow effect that is exciting and exceedingly romantic. Looking into your partners eyes in the candlelight can be mesmerizing.

The food must be delicious so that it contributes to the overall feeling of pleasure. Badly cooked food can, not only spoil your appetite but also your mood. Also keep in mind the likes and dislikes of your partner while ordering food. Wine and champagne will make the evening more intimate and romantic.

We all know the effect of music on romance. You can ask for soft music so as to make your evening even more romantic. If you are comfortable dancing, you can enjoy a slow dance with your partner.

With the setting perfect for a romantic evening you can enjoy conversation too. Ensure that you have privacy and then forget the world around you. Take care not be just a good speaker but also a good listener. Nothing can be more annoying than the constant chatter of the partner while not showing the decency to listen to the other person. If you really like the person you are sure to be engrossed in the conversation that flows. If you really wish to enjoy a romantic evening be certain to switch off your mobile phone. You would not like your romantic talk to be interrupted by the jarring ring of the mobile.

Remember that a romantic evening is to be relished so, make every effort to make it exciting and an experience to cherish.

Vacation Time In China (Part 2)

By John Abbot

My first vacation in China was, I thought, well planned and well thought out.

I was newly single, having recently separated from my girlfriend of 3 years, the shortest of my 5 long-term relationships with western women, evidence enough that I was incapable of maintaining a lifetime partnership with any woman born and raised in North America. I had always been attracted to Asian women, but had never had the opportunity to act on that feeling, and at 48 years of age time was running out.

I”d been planning the trip for several months and had even managed to combine it with 2 days of business in China which meant my flights across the Pacific were being paid for as well as 2 night’’s accommodation. I was going to spend 2 weeks in China and decided not to try to do too much so I planned to spend time in 4 different cities, and then, more importantly, I had spent many nights on the internet and had managed to line up 4 different Chinese women to act as my dates and my guides in each of those cities.

Did I feel a little guilty about this arrangement - yes. Did I feel a bit like a cad - yes. Was I looking forward to it with baited breath - oh YES!!

The first stage of the trip, for 5 days before business was to start, was to be 1 night in Shanghai, then a train ride to Hangzhou, supposedly one of the most beautiful cities in China for a 4 day stay with one of my Chinese ladies. I”d traveled extensively around the Western hemisphere, I”d studiously studied my “China - The Rough Guide”, and I was perfectly confident in my ability to book hotels, train tickets and domestic flights on the spot and for immediate use. So I boarded my flight on April 29th, drank a few free rum and cokes, swallowed a sleeping pill, grabbed a little sleep, and confidently touched down in Shanghai late afternoon of April 30th. The airport seemed pretty busy but what the heck, this was China.

On the bus into Shanghai I was lucky to be seated by a Chinese university student anxious to practise his English, so I ended up explaining my travel plans to him. My first hint that something was amiss was the mild look of concern on his face. He suggested he”d be happy to help me get to my hotel, and since I had a couple of heavy bags I accepted gratefully. When we arrived at the hotel I planned to book there were surprisingly no rooms available, contrary to the best advice of my trusted travel guide, which indicated you could almost always get a room in any hotel in China. Only when my new Chinese friend said he wasn”t surprised did I start to get a bit of a stomach ache.

“Why,” I queried, “are you not surprised?”.

“Well,” my little buddy responded in what was surprisingly good English, “tomorrow is Labour Day, and everyone in China is traveling tonight and for the next week.”

“What did you say?” was my clever comeback, but his answer did not change.

“I think we should maybe go to the train station and try to get you a ticket now” my little ally added.

By this time I was very happy indeed to have found such a good and faithful sidekick, and I adopted his plan immediately. I would try to get a train now and sleep on the journey. Tomorrow in Hangzhou I would book into my hotel which I had pre-booked because of my pending 4 night date, needing a specified place to rendezvous. Fortunately the train station was nearby, only a few blocks from the hotel we were in. Unfortunately the lineups for train tickets started in the hotel lobby. After fighting to the head of the train queue (the longest battle of my life in spite of being assisted by both my loyal sidekick and a sympathetic Chinese cop) I was advised that there would be no train tickets available for 2 days. My confidence was starting to ebb.

My friend and I decided that the best thing I could do was take a taxi from Shanghai to Hangzhou, because, I stated, I thought it best to escape the craziness of Shanghai at the time. I was not then aware that Hangzhou is the one city in China where Chinese tourists from all over the country will go to congregate with family instead of going home. The bizarreness that is Hangzhou during the 3 national vacation periods is an experience I intend to never suffer again, even if self inflicted death is required to intervene.

My friend negotiated a taxi for me, and I suspect he got a 10% cut of an inflated price, but even so I cannot begrudge him as he had probably saved my life already at least twice. The taxi took over 2 hours and cost me about 90 USD. I was actually able to get my room that night on my arrival because they had accidentally booked me in a day early, and the hotel was a decent 4 star number owned by the Red Army.

So I settled in, then headed upstairs to the hotel bar, and tried to order a cold beer, intending to have a quiet night while waiting for my first Chinese date to arrive the next day. Nobody seemed to understand what a cold beer was, which I attributed to my complete lack of Chinese and their almost as complete lack of English, until I walked over to the bar myself to point to a cold beer only to find all the beer neatly stacked on the counter outside of the empty beer cooler.

This was over 5 years ago now, and at that time the Chinese almost religiously believed that drinking anything cold was a surefire way to bring about an early demise. They were not sure what the beer cooler was for, but it for damned sure was not for cooling beer. I managed to convince them to put a half pack in the cooler just for me, thinking I would enjoy them the next day when they were actually cold, but they dutifully removed them overnight to ensure that no sane person accidentally consumed a cold beer and died while on their watch.
